Lorenz Scheurl

Lorenz Scheurl (also Laurentius Scheuerl ; born August 5, 1558 in Ulm , † August 13, 1613 in Helmstedt ) was a German Lutheran theologian , clergyman and university professor .

Life

Lorenz Scheurl came from an academically educated family. He first attended school in Ulm before going to the University of Tübingen . From there he moved to the University of Strasbourg , where he obtained his master's degree in 1576 . He then returned to the University of Tübingen, where he devoted another four years to studying theology.

Scheurl held a position as a deacon in Pforzheim for one year from 1580 before he became court preacher to the margraves of Baden-Durlach . Just three years later he was transferred to Kreuznach , which, however, at the instigation of the Reformed, he left after two years. He returned to Durlach, where he was appointed court preacher to Ernst Friedrich and at the same time inspector of the Durlach grammar school and the churches of the margraviate.

When the conversion of the margrave from the Lutheran to the Reformed denomination became apparent, Scheurl went to Northern Germany and was first associate professor in January 1592 , then in October 1592 after the death of the incumbent full professor at the University of Helmstedt and general superintendent there. On May 30, 1598 he finally received the doctorate to Dr. theol. Scheurl turned down several offers and stayed with his large family in Helmstedt until his death. He died of consumption shortly after his wife .

His children include Heinrich Julius Scheurl, Professor of Moral Philosophy from Helmstedt .
