In Germany there are three Handel societies for the maintenance of the work of the composer Georg Friedrich Handel . The societies are closely related to the respective Handel Festival.

Goettingen

The Göttingen International Handel Festival developed from the rediscovery of the Handel operas, which began in Göttingen in 1920 with the German premiere of the Rodelinde opera and led to a new occupation with music and dramatic works by Handel both in Göttingen and in other cities in Germany.

In the following years, other operas were performed - Otto and Theophano (1921), Julius Caesar (1922), Xerxes (1923), Ezio (1924) - until 1927 there was an expansion to other musical genres in Handel's oeuvre as well as to other composers. On March 12, 1931, the Göttingen Handel Society was founded. V. founded with the aim of maintaining Handel's works and hosting the festival by judge Walter Meyerhoff .

Hall

Handel's works have been performed regularly in his native Halle since the beginning of the 19th century . Based on the Göttingen operatic renaissance, operas by Handel were also performed from the beginning of the 1920s. The Handel Festival in Halle (Saale) has been held annually in Handel's hometown since 1952 . In 1955, the Georg Friedrich Händel Society in Halle (international association, based in Halle) was founded in order to support the festival and to “research and propagate Handel in all directions”. It publishes the Halle Handel Edition , the critical and historical complete edition of Handel's works, as well as Handel yearbooks.

Karlsruhe

The Handel Society Karlsruhe eV has supported the Karlsruhe International Handel Festival and the International Handel Academy since it was founded on October 9, 1989 . The chairman is Peter Overbeck . The Handel Society has been awarding the Handel Youth Prize in three categories every year since 1996 .

The Handel Days, which have been held in Karlsruhe since 1978, were elevated to the status of festivals in 1985 (International Handel Festival since 2014) and have since taken place annually at the end of February (around the composer's birthday). In 1985 its own orchestra, the German Handel Soloists , was founded. In 1986 an International Handel Academy with master courses in baroque performance practice was established.
