Walter Meyerhoff

Walter Meyerhoff (born September 25, 1890 in Duderstadt ; † August 20, 1977 in Göttingen ) was a German judge and CDU politician .

Life

Meyerhoff studied law at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich and Münster in Westphalia. After a short time from 1920 as a judge in Cologne, the Catholic became a judge at the Göttingen Regional Court in 1923 . From 1933 he was no longer included in promotions during the Nazi era because of his Jewish grandfather. His basic political views and his beliefs brought him considerable personal difficulties until 1945. In particular , he was reproached for a large donation for the construction of the St. Paulus Church in Göttingen and for his involvement in its parish . After 1945 he was president of the regional court in Göttingen until he retired in 1958. After retiring, he became involved in local politics for the CDU and was a member of the Göttingen city council from 1961 to 1976 and first mayor of the city from 1968 to 1973. He held several honorary positions and was chairman of the Handel Society in Göttingen from 1931 to 1976 . He had been an honorary citizen of the Georg-August-Universität since 1959 and an honorary citizen of the city of Göttingen since 1970. In the upper Herzberger Landstrasse, on the Hainberg just below the Rohn , one of the Göttingen memorial plaques commemorates him.
