The Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium (MGG; named in 1965 after the painter Matthias Grünewald, who was born in Würzburg ) is a high school in the Frauenland district of Würzburg that offers a musical and a linguistic branch. Affiliated is a boarding school . In addition, as a seminar school, the school trains teachers in German, English, history, geography, Catholic religion and sport for women.

location

The Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium in Würzburg is located in the immediate vicinity of the University at Wittelsbacherplatz , the Franz-Oberthür-Schule vocational training center and the Goethe-Kepler-Grundschule. The MGG can be reached via public transport with bus lines 6, 10 and 114. There are also connections to Zellerau as well as Heidingsfeld, Margetshöchheim and Gerbrunn.

Branches

Musical branch

The musical branch focuses on profile building in the subjects of art and music. Learning an instrument is compulsory and is also offered free of charge at the school. The foreign languages are English and Latin, the order of which can be freely chosen. It is also possible to learn a foreign language (Italian) that starts late. A prerequisite for the transfer is at least a grade 2 in music, but not playing an instrument.

Your Excellency Branch of Music

The "Music Department " established on February 5, 2009 by the then Minister of Education, Ludwig Spaenle , is a singular project of the Bavarian Ministry of Culture exclusively at this school. In the 2018/19 school year, the MGG and the PreCollege of the University of Music Würzburg founded the "Center for Musical Excellence Promotion Würzburg". Along with this cooperation, the name was changed to “Excellence Branch Music”.

The aim is to provide optimal support for musically outstanding children and young people. The combination of a musical range of subjects at the highest level with a school environment geared towards the needs of young musicians should give young musicians the best opportunities for a career in the musical field and at the same time enable them to graduate from a general school.

This Würzburg model is based on a three-stage concept:

  • the PreCollege of the HfM Würzburg for the top talent;
  • the excellence branch of the grammar school, in which special musical talents are promoted with the option of switching to the PreCollege or the full music course if the progress is made;
  • the musical branch of the MGG.

In addition to intensive instrumental lessons, specific theoretical basics (ear training, musical composition) are taught. The Ministry of Culture also provided lessons for accompaniment, piano and chamber music as a minor .

The affiliated state boarding school offers foreign students accommodation and practice facilities for participating in the Excellence Branch as well as close proximity to the Würzburg University of Music.

Linguistic branch

The specialty of the linguistic branch is the learning of a third foreign language in the 8th grade. As in the musical branch, English and Latin are the first two foreign languages and can be freely selected in their order. The third foreign language in the eighth grade is Spanish. A modern sequence of languages is also offered with English, French and Spanish as a third foreign language. In the linguistic branch, it is also possible to learn a foreign language (Italian) that begins late as a substitute for the first or second foreign language.

Scholarships from the Roland Berger Foundation

For these scholarship holders, a scientific and technological branch was set up from 2013 to 2016, each with its own class, which expires when they reach the upper level. Since 2017 only individual scholarships have been awarded.

history

building

Teachers' training institute at Wittelsbacherplatz 1880

Until 1970 the school and boarding school were located in the buildings of the former teacher training institute on Wittelsbacher Platz, built in 1880, which moved there in 1955. The institute, called “Deutsches Gymnasium” from 1953 onwards, instead of a third foreign language, included intensified training in the subjects of music, art and German and also differed in that it did not begin until the seventh grade. After a renovation, the city theater, today Mainfranken Theater Würzburg , used the gym from 1948 to December 3, 1966. With the beginning of the 1970/71 school year, lessons began on July 7, 1970 with a new name in the newly built buildings at the current location.

Special course

Special courses for repatriates and Russian immigrants were set up from 1990 to 2012. These offered the opportunity to acquire the general higher education entrance qualification or technical college entrance qualification in a two-year course and thus enable study. As a rule, the Otto Benecke Foundation took over a grant to attend the course .

Architecture and furnishings

music

The entire 4th floor is available to the music department. There is a large and a small music hall as well as a chamber music room, which can also be used individually or together as recording rooms for a semi-professional recording studio on the same floor . The remaining rooms are equipped with pianos, so that they are available for both instrumental lessons and for students to practice. The school has three organs that can be used for concerts, but also for practice.

Boarding school and day care center

MGG boarding school: View of the residential building, on the right the farm building

The MGG runs both a boarding school and a day boarding school . Meals are offered to all students in the school's own canteen.

New construction and renovation

As part of the IZBB funding, the school received new buildings: a three-story extension with new classrooms, work, support and computer rooms, a library and an additional lounge. These were officially handed over to the school family at the end of October 2008 by the administrative expenses officer, the Free State of Bavaria. All other buildings in the school have been renovated and modernized. This also includes the equipment with internet and projectors in all classrooms as well as the redesign of the specialist rooms. In the “Silentium” room, a WLAN is accessible to all students from the 10th grade.

Accessibility

The entire school is barrier-free . This includes a total of three elevators in the school building and boarding school. All entrances are also passable without any obstacles. In addition to appropriate sanitary facilities in all parts of the building, the boarding school also has a barrier-free living room on the ground floor.

safety

In every room of the school and boarding school there is a telephone, in several publicly accessible areas (entrances, stairwells) there are additional emergency telephones with direct dialing connections to " 112 ". All classrooms are equipped with a peephole (inside) and doorknob (outside). A signpost and color system ensures orientation in the house.

Partnerships

Alumni Grünewald

The Alumni Grünewald eV are an association of former MGG students. The association was founded on May 26th, 2009. Here the former headmaster and Heinrich Pleticha were appointed first honorary members. The association supports the school through its own projects and rewards student achievements with honorary prizes.

House newspaper

In-house newspaper from October 26, 2001, first edition

Since the 2001/2002 school year the company newspaper MGGaktuell has been published five times a year , with which the school community receives all the important dates and information about everyday school life . Originally conceived as a double-sided, folded A3 format with a strict three-column design, the initially sober format developed over the years from a mixed two-column layout to the layout of a magazine. In addition to the increase in volume (up to 32 pages), what is most impressive is the continuous color print and the visually and content-wise comprehensive and appealing design.

Grand hall

Immediately opposite the main entrance is the so-called "wing room". This room was rebuilt as part of the IZBB complete renovation of the school in 2008 as a lounge and event room. The room owes its name to its shape, which was modeled on that of the musical instrument of the same name. It is equipped with complex lecture, light and darkening technology, but also offers excellent acoustics for chamber concerts or small theater performances. Special technical features are an inductive hearing system for hearing aid wearers as well as audio transmission options in the school's PA system.

Recording studio

Recording studio: control room

The school has had its own recording studio facility since 2010 . One of the piano rooms was converted into an acoustically insulated control room and a soundproof window to the neighboring chamber music room was inserted. This, as well as the two music halls further away, are connected by multicores and corresponding XLR sockets. In addition to a computer and professional recording software, the technical equipment includes several analog and digital mixing consoles as well as an extensive collection of microphones, cables and adapters. Among other things, the CDs "Six Seasons" and "KILIAN - Mass in honor of the Franconian Apostle" were created there.

Stage equipment

In the course of the building renovation, both the event gym and the stage in the boarding school were equipped with extensive lighting and ELA technology in the sense of a small or medium stage . In addition to 24-channel dimmer cases, this includes a suitable DMX control and extensive cabling to several slots in the room. In addition, the gym has a prospect train with an electric drive, as well as traverses to design one half of the room as a play area for dance, concert or theater performances.

Ballet hall

On the ground floor of the class wing there is a ballet hall, equipped with a mirror wall, ballet bars, AV system and a special sports floor. It is primarily used by dance groups at the school, but it can also be used as part of class for exercise or meditation phases.

Johann Nepomuk Neumann Chapel

In the basement of the boarding school there is a consecrated chapel named after St. Johann Nepomuk Neumann . A " rector ecclesiae " has been appointed. The room was originally planned as a garage in the course of the new school building between 1967 and 1970, but this was discarded in favor of the current sacred space. In addition to the original large-scale stained glass windows, there are two bronze reliefs, "Angels making music" and a three-manual organ . The benches are grouped in three semicircular rows of segments around the silver metallic altar in the center, with the floor and walls in black natural stone forming an effective contrast. In 2015 the room was renovated and a new sacristy was set up.
The room offers an effective ambience for individual works of fine art that the Diocese of Würzburg has made available on loan.

Practice organ (Müller 2017)

Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium Würzburg, practice organ in room 446

Location: main building, room 446 (4th floor)
At this location there was a pneumatic organ from the chapel of the former school building on Wittelsbacherplatz. A repair of the unfavorably arranged, too loud and leaky instrument was no longer worthwhile, so that in 2014 the decision was made to dismantle it into its individual parts and rebuild it with changed registers, a new console and an electrified action. All work was carried out by the school's organ instructor with the participation of individual students from his organ classes. In December 2017 the instrument was finished, tuned and intoned. The external appearance was deliberately left open in order to emphasize the workshop character. "The result is a romantic instrument that enriches the organ landscape at the Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium with the neo-baroque organ in the small music hall and the three-manual universal organ in the chapel of the boarding school with another musical era."
