Andres Hall (born May 9 . Jul / 21st May  1861 greg. In the village Selja today Landsgemeinde Tori , Estonia ; † 23. June 1931 in Los Angeles , USA ) was an Estonian prose writer.

Life

Andres Saal was born in Pärnu County, the son of a farmer. He attended the village school in Selja and the parish school in Tori. Then he continued his education independently. In 1880 he passed his teaching exams and was active in the school service. From 1884 to 1890 he was editor of the newspaper Olevik in Tartu , attended lectures at the University of Tartu and tried his hand at running a shop. In 1893 he trained as a photographer and zincographer in Bavaria . From 1894 to 1897 he worked in the Olevik printing house .

In 1897 Saal moved to Frankfurt am Main as a photographer and in 1898 to Indonesia . He settled on Java Island . From 1902 he worked in Jakarta (then Batavia ) as a photographer for the topographic service of the Dutch army.

In 1920, Saal moved to the United States as a pensioner , but he never lost contact with Estonia. Saal died in California in 1931 . His ashes were first buried in Tartu and later in Tori.

Andres Saal is, along with Eduard Bornhöhe, the most famous author of historical Estonian novels and national romanticism in Estonia . He made his debut in 1885 with the story Põgenenud kloostri kasvandik .

The trilogy of the novels Wambola (1889), Aita (1891) and Leili (1892/93) in particular established his success. The hall describes the prehistoric struggle of the Estonians and Livs for their freedom during the 12th and 13th centuries. His novels corresponded to the need for exciting adventure stories and historical-patriotic transfiguration of the Estonian past.

Other historical adventure novels are Hilda (1890) and Uudu ja Meeta (1892) and the story Sõstra silmad (1890). From the Boer War is Priiuse yes isamaa eest (1903). In his novels Valge vanne (1904, first published as a book in 1912) and Valgus hommikust (1929), he takes a stand against colonialism .

In addition, Saal wrote the historical treatises Päris ja prii (two volumes, 1891/93), in which he describes Estonian history from 1219 to 1866, and Üleüldine isamaa ajalugu (1893). He published numerous travel reports.

Andres Saal also translated Turgenev's poetry into Estonian .
