The Schiller-Gymnasium (SGH) is the largest of the three high schools in Hof (Saale) . It is named after the poet Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805). The main building of the school has been the Schiller Schoolhouse, located in Hofer Westend , since 1965 . Further classrooms are located in the old town schoolhouse about 50 meters away.

On March 6, 2013, the SGH was awarded the title “ School without Racism - School with Courage ”. The sponsorship was taken over by long-time director of the Hof International Film Festival, Heinz Badewitz, who died in 2016 .

profile

In the Schiller-Gymnasium there are two different high school branches: the scientific and technological branch and the economic and social science branch with an economic profile. As a second foreign language after English in addition to French and Latin are elected. From the 10th grade onwards, it is possible to replace one of the two previous foreign languages with Italian . From the respective year of school enrollment, an average of around 70% of the students at Schiller-Gymnasium are taken to the Abitur .

Exchange programs take place every year with Loué at Le Mans and Villeneuve-la-Garenne near Paris in France , Mogliano Veneto near Venice in Italy and Joensuu in Finland .

On the last Sunday before the summer holidays, a big school festival takes place annually on the school premises. In addition to local dishes and music from a teachers' band, there is a lottery, a book bazaar and various special events for individual classes.

history

Today's Schiller-Gymnasium was founded in 1833 as the Hof trade school. 44 years later, in 1877, it became a secondary school. After another 55 years, in 1922, the secondary school was expanded to become an upper secondary school. The first Abitur examination took place in 1925 . In 1938 the school was converted into a high school for boys. After the Second World War , the educational institution was again run as an upper secondary school from 1946. Since the move to the Schiller schoolhouse in 1965, the school has been called Schiller-Gymnasium Hof. In September 2015 the school celebrates its 50th anniversary with a ceremony.

building

The Schiller school house was originally built for the elementary school in Hofer Westend. Construction of the building began in 1905, the hundredth year of death of the namesake Friedrich Schiller. The schoolhouse was built in the New Renaissance style and inaugurated in 1907. Towards the end of the Second World War , the building served as a hospital . The primary school was again housed in the building until 1963. The building was then renovated in the businesslike style of the 1960s. Since 1965 the Schiller school house has housed the upper secondary school for boys, today's Schiller grammar school. Before the 100th anniversary of the inauguration in 2007, the general renovation of the school building was completed.

main building

The main building is a horseshoe-shaped building that surrounds the playground. It has four upper floors and three entrances (main entrance, Westendstrasse entrance, Wilhelmstrasse entrance). On the ground floor there are workshops and the auditorium, on the first floor the natural science rooms and on the fourth floor the specialist rooms for music, IT and art.

The auditorium is on the ground floor and was a gymnasium with a wooden floor until the renovation. Since then, it has been a break hall with a granite floor, in which a few benches have been set up for guests to sit in during breaks. The basement room is accessible via an elevator, where chairs are stored that can be used in the hall for events.

Above the two outer staircases there are two towers that were planned for decorative purposes during construction and can be accessed via the attic. There is also a weather station there.

During the renovation in 2007, a hexagonal two-storey pavilion with four additional classrooms was built on the Westendstrasse wing, which can be reached via the hallway on the ground floor. It differs architecturally from the style of the main building.

Old town school

The old town school at the crossing Marienstraße / Luitpoldstraße is a branch of the Schiller-Gymnasium. There is a gymnasium on the ground floor, and two upper floors with classrooms. This is where the upper level, i.e. the Q11 and Q12 qualification phases, as well as the office of the upper level coordinators are located. On the ground floor there are also the lounges for the upper level and two further classrooms. Since the old town school does not have all the subject rooms, the classes of the two upper school grades regularly switch between the old town school and the main building.

music

In addition to official music lessons, various elective courses are offered. The choir work is divided into grades. The number of participants in the 5th grade choir is around 75 children, and up to 100 students take part in the “large choir”. In addition, a vocal ensemble consists of singers who are particularly vocal. As part of elective lessons, string instruments such as violin , cello and double bass can be learned in cooperation with the Hof Symphony Orchestra . After a successful lesson there is the possibility to participate in the school orchestra. Another project is the wind class, in which around 30 people take part per year. In addition to the regular music lessons, instruments such as the flute , clarinet , saxophone , trumpet , trombone , euphonium , tuba , French horn and percussion are taught in further lessons . The further path leads to the Symphonic Wind Orchestra Hof.

The musical results are regularly presented by around 400 schoolchildren in the summer and Advent concerts in Hofer Freiheitshalle and Michaeliskirche . Advanced instrumentalists take part in national competitions such as Jugend musiziert . The concert engagement also extends to the Upper Franconia region .

Support association

In the school year 1948/49, the support association “Die Schulgemeinde” was founded by parents, former students, teachers and sponsors of the school. The aim of the association is to improve the equipment of the school through contributions and donations, to support pupils and to promote school events. At the beginning of each year, the school community agrees the allocation of the administered funds with the parents' council and the school management. The annual budget includes amounts for prizes for special school achievements, for grants to needy students on school trips (school camp, snow sports courses, study trips), for increasing the library's book stock or for student exchanges. The teaching company receives grants for additional teaching equipment in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science and in modern audiovisual teaching. In addition, funds are approved to support projects, presentations and for special purchases in the fields of sport, music and art.
