Enoch Widmann (born December 21, 1551 in Hof ; † December 17, 1615 ) was a historian and rector of the Hof high school .

Life

Enoch Widmann was the son of the Hofer citizen and cloth maker Hans Widman, who died in 1572 at the age of 63 as a hospital brother in Wunsiedler. His mother's name was Margaretha. He first attended the Hof grammar school and was able to study theology at the University of Wittenberg from 1575 with the help of a scholarship . Here he acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy in 1578 . In 1581 he returned to Hof.

On the recommendation of the superintendent Johann Streitberger , he got a job as a grammar school teacher and cantor, in 1582 he advanced to the third teaching position, became vice rector in 1591 and was succeeded by Thomas Blebelius as rector in 1596. Widmann's merit is, in addition to some printed and unprinted writings, a city chronicle from Hof ​​up to 1592. The following years were partially expanded to 1601 and 1612. Contemporary critics criticized his overly positive statements about the Hof councilors, who rewarded him with a gilded cup as a thank you for his work in 1592. The first legends of him that go on in Hof have been handed down. He was buried in St. Lorenz . His tomb consists of three wooden panels. Enoch-Widman-Strasse in Hof has been named in his honor since 1911 . His successor as rector at the grammar school was Johann Saturday.
