Earl of Mansfield , in the County of Nottingham , and Earl of Mansfield , of Caen Wood in the County of Middlesex , are two hereditary British titles in the Peerage of Great Britain . The titles have been united since 1843.

The Earls' family seat is Scone Palace near Scone in Perthshire .

Awards

Both titles were awarded to the Scottish lawyer William Murray, 1st Baron Mansfield . He was the fourth son of David Murray, 5th Viscount of Stormont, and was Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench from 1756 to 1788 .

In the first bestowal, he was elevated to Earl of Mansfield , in the County of Nottingham, on October 31, 1776 . In the second bestowal he was on August 1, 1792 the title Earl of Mansfield , of Caen Wood in the County of Middlesex, bestowed. As early as November 8, 1756, he was raised to Baron Mansfield , in the County of Nottingham, in the Peerage of Great Britain .

His titles were provided with different inheritance regulations. The barony was granted without any special addition and was therefore inheritable to legitimate male descendants. In the absence of male descendants, the Earldom of 1776 could also be passed on to Louisa Murray (nee Cathcart), Viscountess Stormont (daughter of the 9th Lord Cathcart ), the second wife of his nephew David Murray, 7th Viscount Stormont , and their male descendants from this same marriage . In the absence of male descendants, the Earldom of 1792 could also be passed on to his last-named nephew, the 7th Viscount Stormont, and his male descendants.

The 1st Earl died childless on December 25, 1793. The Earldom of 1776 fell to the Viscountess Stormont, which became extinct from 1792 to the 7th Viscount Stormont and the barony.

The 2nd Earl second bestowal already led the title Viscount of Stormont created in 1621 , the title Lord Scone created in 1605 and the title Lord Balvaird created in 1641 . All three belong to the Peerage of Scotland and have since been subordinate titles to the respective Earl. The eldest son of the incumbent Earl bears the courtesy title Viscount Stormont as his title heir ( Heir Apparent ) .

The son of the 2nd Countess and the 2nd Earl died before his mother, so that he inherited his father as 3rd Earl second bestowal. His son, in turn, combined both titles as 3rd Earl (first award) and 4th Earl (second award) at the death of the 2nd Countess in 1843.
