Earl of Dysart
Earl of Dysart is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .
The title was created in 1643 for the politician and Member of the House of Commons William Murray . Along with the earliest title, he was given the subordinate title of Lord Huntingtower , also in the Peerage of Scotland.
The 1st Earl inherited his daughter, Elizabeth, as 2nd Countess of Dysart. In 1670 she renounced the titles and received them again through Letter's patent , with retroactive reference to the titles of her father, and with the special addition that it could be passed on to her biological descendants and, in their absence, to their other heirs. She was followed by her son from his first marriage to Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Baronet († 1669), Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Earl of Dysart . He inherited from his father the title of Baronet , of Helmingham Hall in the Baronetage of England. Since the baronet title was only inheritable in the male line, it expired on the death of the 6th Earl in 1821. The son of the 7th Countess , William Tollemache, Lord Huntingtower was given the title of Baronet , of Hanby Hall in the Baronetage of Great Britain in 1793 . He died before his mother, therefore his son Lionel Tollemache inherited both this title and the earl title. When the 9th Earl died in 1935, his niece Wenefryde Scott inherited the title of Earl, while the Baronetcy passed on to his great cousin Lyonel Tollemache .
