Earl of Glasgow is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The respective earl is the hereditary chief of the Boyle clan . The Earls' family seat is Kelburn Castle in Ayrshire , Scotland. The castle is one of the oldest castles in Scotland and has been the seat of the Boyle clan since it was built.

Award

The title was given to David Boyle of Kelburn on April 12, 1703 in recognition of his services to the unification of Scotland and England , which led to the Act of Union in 1707 . Boyle was considered one of the leading architects of the controversial treaty that formed the Kingdom of Great Britain from the two kingdoms .

Subordinate title

The first earl had already been raised to Lord Boyle of Kelburn, Stewartoun, Cumbrae, Finnick, Largs and Dalry on January 31, 1699 . Simultaneously with the elevation to Earl , he was given the titles Viscount of Kelburn and Lord Boyle of Stewartoun, Cumbraes, Fenwick, Largs and Dalry in 1703 . All of these titles also belong to the Peerage of Scotland .

The seventh earl was governor general of New Zealand . After leaving office, he was given the title of Baron Fairlie , of Fairlie in the County of Ayr , on July 23, 1897 , who belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Another title

The fourth Earl , a longtime member of the House of Lords , was made Baron Ross , of Hawkhead in the County of Renfrew on August 11, 1815 . This title, which belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom , expired in 1890 with the death of the sixth earl .
