Viscount of Arbuthnott is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The Viscount of Arbuthnott is the hereditary chief of the Arbuthnott clan .

The family seat is Arbuthnott House , in Arbuthnott , near Inverbervie in Kincardineshire .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on November 16, 1641 by King Charles I through Letters patent for the Scottish knight Sir Robert Arbuthnot . Together with the Viscount title he was awarded the subordinate title Lord Inverbervie , also in the Peerage of Scotland. With this and other awards, the king tried to enlarge the number of royalists in parliament in view of the impending English civil war .
