Earl of Dundee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Earl of Dundee is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland . The title is named after the Scottish city of Dundee .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created in September 1660 for John Scrymgeour, 3rd Viscount of Dudhope . As early as 1644 he had inherited the titles Viscount of Dudhope and Lord Scrimgeour from his father, which his father had been awarded on November 15, 1641. All titles mentioned belong to the Peerage of Scotland. He also inherited the hereditary dignities of Royal Standard Bearer of Scotland (today: Bearer of the Royal Banner ) and Constable of Dundee .

When the first Earl died in 1668, John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale , declared that he had no male offspring and had his lands withdrawn from the Crown to be re-admitted to Charles Maitland, 3rd Earl of Lauderdale , the Duke's younger brother forgive. The titles were suspended until 1953 when the Committee for Privileges of the House of Lords recognized former House MP Henry Scrymgeour-Wedderburn's claim to the title of 11th Earl. He had successfully demonstrated that the 1st Earl had male offspring and that the title in the corresponding line was due to him.

The 11th Earl was awarded the title Baron Glassary , of Glassary in the County of Argyll on July 30, 1954 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , which gave him a seat in the British House of Lords.
