Lord Borthwick is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland . The historic family seat of the Lords was Borthwick Castle near North Middleton in Midlothian .

Award

The title was created on June 12, 1452 for the Scottish knight Sir William de Borthwick of that Ilk . From 1675 to 1762, 1722 to 1870 and 1910 to 1986 the title was suspended because it was unclear who the legitimate heir was. The rest periods ended when the Committee for Privileges and Conduct of the House of Lords confirmed the title of a legitimate descendant and retrospectively recognized his de iure entitled but deceased predecessor as Lords Borthwick. Today his descendant John Borthwick, 24th Lord Borthwick holds the title.
