North Middleton is a village in the Scottish Council Area Midlothian on the northern edge of the Moorfoot Hills . The closest town is Gorebridge, three kilometers to the northwest . Musselburgh is 13 km north, Galashiels 24 km southeast. The eponymous Middleton is one kilometer south. The Gore Water , a tributary of the South Esk, runs a few hundred meters north . In 1971, 160 people lived in North Middleton.
In the early 15th century, Borthwick Castle was a fortress one kilometer northeast of North Middleton. The Scottish Queen Mary Queen of Scots found refuge there in 1567 after the murder of her husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, together with James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell . Middleton Hall mansion , built in the 1710s, is one kilometer to the southeast. The major Arniston House is two miles west of Temple .

North Middleton is just off the A7 ( Edinburgh - Carlisle ). The Gorebridge train station along the Waverley Line has been a long-distance train station nearby since the 19th century. After closing in the 1960s, it will reopen as part of the Borders Railway construction in the 2010s. With the Edinburgh Airport is an international airport located about 22 km north-west.
