The Gorebridge Station is the train station in the Scottish village of Gorebridge in Midlothian . The station is on the Waverley Line . In 1969 the line was shut down and dismantled. The structures that have been preserved were included in the Scottish List of Monuments in 1998 in Category C. Since September 2015, the Gorebridge station has been in service again after the reconstruction of the railway line.

traffic

The North British Railway opened successive sections on the section between Edinburgh and Hawick of the later Waverley Line until 1849 . Gorebridge station along the route opened on July 12, 1847. Coming from Edinburgh, it was about two miles beyond Newtongrange station . The next stop was Fushiebridge . The through station had two tracks and was used for both passenger and freight traffic.

The connection to the railway network was largely responsible for the upswing of the town in the second half of the 19th century. In the 20th century, Gorebridge was one of the stations with higher passenger numbers along the route. It was also the terminus for local trains from Edinburgh at that time. After cargo handling in Gorebridge was stopped on December 28, 1964, the railway station became obsolete on January 6, 1969 when the railway line was abandoned as a result of the Beeching ax . The station had previously been downgraded to an unoccupied stop on March 27, 1967. In the course of the reconstruction of the Waverley Line as Borders Railway , Gorebridge was again given an access point to the railroad traffic. The first rails have been in the area of the station since October 2014. Operations started on September 6, 2015.

description

The station building in 2000

The train station is in the center of Gorebridge. The sandstone building has an almost T-shaped floor plan. The symmetrically constructed west-facing front of the two-story station building is three axes wide. Blinding pillars flank the entrance portal with a combat window , which is crowned by a triangular gable. A harl-plastered porch, which was added in the 20th century, emerges on the asymmetrical south side . An external concrete staircase with a simple steel railing runs along the unadorned gable side. The final gable roofs are covered with gray slate. Today the former station building is used as a public building. The tracks in the station area may not have been removed after the closure, but only covered with a layer of earth. In the course of the reconstruction, not the entire track area was rebuilt, the line is only single-track in this section.

The new, barrier-free platform connects to the south of the former reception building, which is still used privately. In addition to a P + R area , a B + R facility was also set up.
