The Gardens of Appeltern are a complex of sample gardens east of the village of Appeltern , which belongs to the municipality of West Maas en Waal and is near Nijmegen and Tiel in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands . The facility, founded in 1988, has around 200 example gardens , some of which were designed and planned by the initiator and gardener Ben van Ooijen , and some by garden architects , landscape gardeners and authors of gardening books. The total area was originally 0.5 hectares and was expanded in several steps to 22 hectares today. The visit costs an entrance fee. There are various information events on the site, some of which are promotional events by the operator.

history

The beginning of the complex was a 5,000 square meter model garden by the hotelier Ben van Ooijen . This garden was also popular with people who were not guests of the hotel, and after a few years the garden was decoupled from the hotel. The official name of the facility was initially Informatietuinen Appeltern BV (Informationsgarten Appeltern BV (BV = closed / private company with limited liability )), but the name De Tuinen van Appeltern has been in use since 2001 .

From July 1999, one began to create show gardens based on designs by landscape architects and book authors, which were opened on March 1, 2000. In the same year there was also a collaboration with other visitors gardens, including Hortus Haren , Castle Garden Arcen , January Boomkamp Garden , Botanical Garden Ada Hofman pond and the Rhulenhof Garden .

description

Over the course of the year, over 2,000 different plants grow and bloom in the two hundred model gardens. Some examples of the gardens are balcony gardens, lounge gardens, and pond gardens. The facility is located in a rural area between the Maas and Waal, east of De Tuut . The complex was initially only on the north bank of the 'Nieuwe Wetering', a drainage canal, but expanded to its south side in 2013. Nearby cities are Tiel , Nijmegen and Oss .

On some exhibits there is information about the manufacturers and dealers of these things, so the system also serves as an exhibition and showcase for the partners of the garden. The partners are divided into the categories general (9), (garden) architects (12), exhibitors / dealers (116), gardeners (53) and growers (20).
