Earl of Northesk is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland . The title is derived from the north of two rivers called Esk in Angus , Scotland .

The Earls family seat is Ethie Castle near Arbroath .

Award of the title

On November 1, 1647, John Carnegie, 1st Lord Lour , was elevated to Earl of Ethie with the subordinate title Lord Lour and Eglismauldie . On April 20, 1639, he was raised to Lord Lour . On October 25, 1666, he renounced this title and was instead given the title Earl of Northesk and the subordinate title Lord Rosehill . With regard to the protocol order of precedence and seniority, the reassignment is handled like a renaming of the titles from 1647 by virtue of express regulation. The titles are thus treated as if they had been created in 1647, thus ranking in terms of protocol ranking and seniority, for example, before the title of Earl of Dundee created in 1660 .

The oldest brother of the first Earl of Northesk, David Carnegie , had already been awarded the title of Earl of Southesk in 1633 .
