Ethie Castle

Ethie Castle is a castle near the town of Arbroath in Angus , Scotland .

Records of the castle go back to the early 14th century when monks at neighboring Arbroath Abbey built a sandstone tower block. Ethie Castle later came into the possession of Scotland's last cardinal , David Beaton , who was murdered in St Andrews during the Reformation in 1546 by the de Maxwell family . In 1665 it was bought by the Carnegie family (later Earls of Northesk ) and held until 1928 when it was sold to William Cunningham Hector.

Ethie Castle is said to have been the template for the fictional Castle of Knockwhinnock in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Antiquary ( German : Der Alterthümler. A romantic painting. ). Sir Walter Scott was a close friend of William Carnegie, 8th Earl of Northesk, and lived at the castle more often.

Ethie Castle was later renovated by Alistair Forsyth, chief of Clan Forsyth , and has been the seat of the clan ever since. Today the castle is owned by the de Morgan family and has been converted into a hotel .

Ghosts

It is said that a ghost is at work in the castle.
