Earl of Stair is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The Earls' family seat is Lochinch Castle near Stranraer in Wigtownshire . The historic headquarters were Stair House in Stair in East Ayrshire .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was given on April 8, 1703 to the Secretary of State for Scotland John Dalrymple, 2nd Viscount of Stair . Along with the earliest dignity , he was awarded the subordinate titles Viscount of Dalrymple and Lord Newliston, Glenluce and Stranraer . As early as 1695 he had inherited the titles Viscount of Stair and Lord Glenluce and Stranraer created for his father on April 21, 1690 , as well as the title Baronet , of Stair in the County of Ayr, awarded to this on June 2, 1664 . All named titles belong to the Peerage of Scotland, with the exception of the Baronetcy, which belongs to the Baronetage of Nova Scotia.

The 8th Earl was also given the title of Baron Oxenfoord , of Cousland in the County of Edinburgh , on August 16, 1841 , which has since been used as a subordinate title of the Earl. This title belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike its Scottish titles, was associated with an automatic seat in the House of Lords . The title refers to the then residence of the 8th Earl, Oxenfoord Castle near Pathhead in Midlothian , and was bestowed with the special addition that in the absence of male descendants it could also be passed on to the brother of the 8th Earl and his male descendants.

Other titles

The 4th Earl of Stair had inherited the title Earl of Dumfries from his mother in 1742, which can also be inherited in the female line . Since his son died before him, this title fell on his death in 1769 to a different line of the family than the Earldom Stair and is now used by the Marquess of Bute as a subordinate title.
