Lochinch Castle

Lochinch Castle is a mansion near the Scottish village of Castle Kennedy in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, together with various external buildings, it forms a category A monument ensemble.

history

The lands had been owned by the Earls of Stair for several centuries . A fire devastated their castle, Castle Kennedy , in 1716 , which was never rebuilt. The Scottish politician and lawyer John Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair, commissioned the construction of Lochinch Castle on the grounds around Castle Kennedy . To this end, he commissioned the Edinburgh architects Brown and Wardrop to plan the building. The work was completed in 1868. The property is inherited within the family and is still the seat of the Earls of Stair to this day. The White Loch dugout canoe was found nearby in 1870 .

Lochinch Castle is about two kilometers north of Castle Kennedy and five kilometers east of Stranraer on the neck of the Rhins of Galloway . The asymmetrical mansion is designed in the Scottish Baronial style , but also has elements of the French palace architecture. The stonework of the two-story Lochinch Castle is cream-colored sandstone from Lancashire . The interior is designed in a Jacobean style. The masterful stucco work and the decorative woodwork are remarkable. An open fireplace is made of marble with oak decorations.
