Castle Kennedy , Gaelic Caisteal nan Ceanadach , is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway or in the traditional county of Wigtownshire . It is located around four kilometers east of Stranraer .

history

The name of the village is derived from the castle Castle Kennedy in the north . John Kennedy, 5th Earl of Cassilis , had it built in 1607 on the site of an older fortification. It came into the possession of the Earls of Stair and burned down in 1716. After the castle was not restored, commissioned John Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair 1864 the construction of the mansion Lochinch Castle , which is still the seat of the Earl of Stair.

In 1941 a military airfield was built east of Castle Kennedy. It served as a training facility, among other things, for combat tactics against submarines. In the meantime, however, the facility has been abandoned. As part of the 1991 census survey, Castle Kennedy had 400 residents.

traffic

With the A75 , which connects Stranraer with Gretna Green , Castle Kennedy is located directly on a trunk road. The A77 , which connects Portpatrick with Glasgow , can also be reached within a few kilometers via the A751 to the west . Significant for the development of the village was the construction of the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway , at which Castle Kennedy received its own station. The station, which opened in 1861, was abandoned when the line was closed in 1965. From Cairnryan in the north there are ferry connections to Larne in Northern Ireland . as well as Belfast .
