Sketrick Castle

Sketrick Castle ( Irish Caisleán Scathdeirge ) is a ruined castle near the village of Whiterock in County Down, Northern Ireland . It is believed that the castle's origins date back to the 12th century. The residential tower and the passage to the source are State Care Historic Monuments in the townland of Sketrick Island in the Ards and North Down district .

history

The castle dates from the end of the 12th century. Sir Robert Savage bought it in the 14th century . In the annals of the four masters , the capture of Caislén Sgath Deircce by an army led by Ó Néill in 1470 in support of the MacQuillan clan is recorded. They captured the castle and gave it to the MacQuillans for safe keeping. The castle remained intact until 1896, when a storm destroyed most of it.

construction

Sketrick Castle was originally 17.3 meters high, 15.5 meters long and 8.2 meters wide. This corresponds to a height of four floors. There was also a boat landing site and an underground stone passage that was discovered in 1957. The residential tower had four rooms on the ground floor, the largest of which had a basket arch vault and two brick-clad niches, presumably stoves. The castle falls incorporated under the Bawn ( curtain wall ) to a chamber with consoles lead to a fresh water source. Parts of the bawn to the north and east of the castle have been preserved to this day.
