Stair House

Stair House is a manor house in the Scottish village of Stair in the East Ayrshire council area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

Stair House is located in a bend in the River Ayr on the northern edge of the small scattered settlement of Stair. Three round towers protrude from the two- to three-story quarry stone building with an L-shaped floor plan. The upper part of the north-west tower is provided with entry holes, as it once served as a pigeon tower .

history

The nucleus of Stair House was a tower house , which was built in the late 16th or early 17th century. It is still part of the manor house as the north end of the west wing (in the picture on the left between the two towers). The major expansions probably took place in the late 17th century, possibly in 1673, to create an ancestral home for the aristocratic Dalrymple of Stair family . In the middle of the 19th century, the property of the Earl of Stair was described as partially ruinous, while other parts of the building were still inhabited. Stair House was later fully restored.
