Marquess of Linlithgow
Marquess of Linlithgow , in the County of Linlithgow or West Lothian , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The Marquesses' family home is Hopetoun House west of Edinburgh .
Award
The title was created on October 27, 1902 for John Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun . He was a well-known colonial administrator and conservative politician. Among other things, he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household and first Governor General of Australia .
Subordinate title
An ancestor of the 1st Marquess, Sir Charles Hope , supported the Act of Union 1707 . He was therefore raised to Earl of Hopetoun , Viscount of Aithrie and Lord Hope on April 15, 1703 . These titles, which all belong to the Peerage of Scotland , could also be passed on to any daughters of the first earl and their male descendants through a special note at the time of the award.
On February 3, 1809, the 3rd Earl was awarded the title Baron Hopetoun , of Hopetoun in the County of Linlithgow, who belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom . As a result, the respective earl acquired a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . Since the Earl was childless, this title was awarded with the special note that it could also be passed on to male descendants of his father.
The future 4th Earl was raised to Baron Niddry , of Niddry Castle in the County of Linlithgow, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on May 17, 1814, two years before he inherited the title from his half-brother .
All of these titles are listed as subordinate titles to the marquessate. The title heir ( Heir apparent ) leads the courtesy title Earl of Hopetoun , whose eldest son that of a Viscount of Aithrie .
Another title
In 1792, the 3rd Earl inherited from his great-uncle the de iure claim to the title of Earl of Annandale and Hartfell , created in 1662 , although he never formally accepted it out of ignorance. This title, created in 1662, which also belongs to the Peerage of Scotland, can be inherited in the female line and went to his daughter on his death. However, evidence of the succession was only made in 1985.
