Earl of Annandale and Hartfell is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

As Lord Johnstone, the Earl is also the hereditary clan chief of Clan Johnstone .

Awards, subordinate and other titles

The title was created on February 13, 1661 for James Johnstone, 2nd Earl of Hartfell . The award was made along with the subordinate titles Viscount of Annand and Lord Johnstone, of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandale all in the Peerage of Scotland. In return, he renounced the titles Earl of Hartfell and Lord Johnstone of Lochwood, Moffatdale and Evandale (both created in 1643) and Lord Johnstone of Lochwood (created in 1633), which he had inherited from his father in 1653. The award document contained a special regulation that the Earldom of Annandale and Hartfell should apply to the protocol ranking as already on March 18, 1643 (time of the creation of the Earldom of Hartfell).

On April 23, 1662 he was given the title Earl of Annandale and Hartfell and Lord Johnstone of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandale , again. This time with the special addition that in the absence of male descendants, the title can also be inherited in full by the eldest daughter and her male descendants.

His son, the 2nd Earl, was raised to Marquess of Annandale on June 24, 1701 . This award was made along with the subordinate titles of Earl of Hartfell , Viscount of Annand and Lord Johnstone of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandale , all in the Peerage of Scotland.

After the death of the 3rd Marquess on April 29, 1792, the titles were suspended, as initially no one effectively demonstrated his inheritance claim to the title. It was not until 1985 that Patrick Hope-Johnstone succeeded in asserting his claim to the titles of Earl of Annandale and Hartfell and Lord Johnstone before the Committee for Privileges of the House of Lords - the deceased members of his lineage from which he was awarded, according to the special addition at the award of 1662 established the claim, the de iure title was accordingly awarded retrospectively . The other titles are still dormant or have expired.
