Marquess of Annandale was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland , named after the Scottish area of Annandale .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was bestowed on June 24, 1701 to William Johnstone, 2nd Earl of Annandale and Hartfell . The award was made along with the subordinate titles Earl of Hartfell , Viscount of Annand and Lord Johnston of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandale , all in the Peerage of Scotland.

From his father on July 17, 1672 he had inherited the title Earl of Annandale and Hartfell , Viscount of Annand and Lord Johnston of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandale , which was awarded to him on February 13, 1661 in the Peerage of Scotland .

The marquessate expired with the death of the 3rd Marquess on April 29, 1792 or has been suspended since no one has been able to effectively prove his inheritance claim to the title.
