James Hope-Johnstone, 3rd Earl of Hopetoun ( 23 August 1741 - 29 May 1816 at Hopetoun House , Linlithgowshire ), was a Scottish peer .

Hope-Johnstone was the son of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun and his first wife Anne, a daughter of James Ogilvy, 5th Earl of Findlater . As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title Viscount Aithrie from 1742 to 1781 . When his father died in 1781, he inherited his earl title. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire from 1794 to 1816 . He was also from 1784 to 1790, and again from 1794 to 1796 as a Scottish Representative Peer elected member of the British House of Lords . In 1809 he was awarded the title Baron Hopetoun , of Hopetoun in the County of Linlithgow, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , with the right to inherit the title on all male descendants of his father. This gave him a permanent seat in the House of Lords.

In 1792 he inherited de jure his great-uncle George van den Bempdé-Johnstone, 3rd Marquess of Annandale , as 5th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell , although he never successfully claimed the title. He also inherited Johnstone's family estates and added his family name "Hope" to the family name "Hope-Johnstone".

Hope-Johnstone married Lady Elizabeth, daughter of George Carnegie, 6th Earl of Northesk , in 1766 . The couple had five daughters. Lady Elizabeth died in 1793. Her husband survived her over twenty years and died in May 1816 at the age of 74. The earliest dignity was inherited by his half-brother John . His claim to the title Earl of Annandale and Hartfell passed on to his eldest daughter Anne, as this could also be inherited in a female line.

In 1786 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
