John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun

John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun ( 7 September 1704 - 12 February 1781 ) was a Scottish - British nobleman .

He was the eldest son of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun , from his marriage to Lady Henrietta Johnstone, daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale . When his father died in 1742, he inherited his title of nobility as 2nd Earl of Hopetoun .

From 1744 to 1760 he held the office of Lord of Police (Home Secretary) for Scotland. In 1747 he was appointed trustee ( curator bonis ) over his property because of a mental illness of his half-uncle, George Johnstone, 4th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell (1720-1792) . In 1754 he was Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland .

Hope was married three times. His first marriage was on September 14, 1733, Lady Anne Ogilvy († 1759), a daughter of James Ogilvy, 5th Earl of Findlater . With her he had four daughters and five sons:

In his second marriage, he married on October 30, 1762 Jane Oliphant († 1767), daughter of Robert Oliphant, lord of Rossie in Perthshire . With her he had two daughters and a son:

In his third marriage, he married on June 10, 1767 Lady Elizabeth Leslie († 1788), daughter of Alexander Melville, 5th Earl of Leven . With her he had two sons and four daughters:
