Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry

Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry (* around 1698 , † October 22, 1778 ), was a Scottish-British nobleman .

Life

Charles Douglas was the second-born son of James Douglas, 2nd Duke of Queensberry from his marriage to Mary Boyle.

He was raised on June 17, 1706 in the Peerage of Scotland to Earl of Solway , Viscount of Tiberris and Lord Douglas of Lockerbie, Dalveen and Thornhill .

Since his older brother James Douglas (1697-1715) was mentally ill, Charles inherited all of his titles of nobility with the exception of the title Marquess of Queensberry , which only fell to Charles when the older brother died in 1715, when his father died as the 3rd Duke of Queensberry .

He was Privy Councilor , Vice Admiral, Grand Keeper of the Seal (since 1761) and Lord Justice General of Scotland (since 1763).

Together with his wife, he was a great patron of the writer John Gay , who also spent his twilight years on the couple's estate in Wiltshire .

Charles Douglas married Catherine in 1720, daughter of Henry Hyde, 4th Earl of Clarendon with whom he had two sons:

• Henry Douglas, Earl of Drumlanrig (1722-1754);
• Charles Douglas, Earl of Drumlanrig (1726-1756).

Since his sons died before him, the son of his cousin William Douglas, 2nd Earl of March , William succeeded him as the 4th Duke of Queensberry . The titles Duke of Dover and Earl of Solway , each together with associated subordinate titles, however, expired.
