Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun

Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun KT (* 1681 ; † February 26, 1742 ) was a Scottish nobleman.

Hope was the son of John Hope of Hopetoun; his grandfather was Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet of Craighall. Around 1680 he had acquired the feudal barony of Niddry Castle from the Earl of Winton . He also acquired from Sir Walter Seton the neighboring feudal barony of Abercorn, with which the hereditary office of sheriff of the County of Linlithgowshire was connected. So he became Linlithgowshire's representative in the Scottish Parliament in 1684.

Charles Hope married Henrietta in 1689, the eldest daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale . He had thirteen children with her, five of whom died in childhood.

In 1703 Hope was raised to Earl of Hopetoun in the Peerage of Scotland . He supported the union with England . From 1722 he was one of the Scottish Representative Peers in the British House of Lords , a position he held until his death. He was also Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire from 1715 . He was also Lord High Commissioner in the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1723 . He was also President of the Bank of Scotland from 1740 until his death .

In 1738 he was accepted into the thistle order . When Hope died in 1742, his title passed to his eldest son, John . One of his grandsons was George Johnstone Hope , the most highly decorated officer who fought in the Battle of Trafalgar .
