Earl of Annandale

Earl of Annandale was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on March 13, 1625 for the courtier John Murray, 1st Viscount of Annand . Together with the Earldom he was awarded the subordinate title of Lord Murray of Tynningham . On June 28, 1622 he had already been awarded the subordinate titles Viscount of Annand and Lord Murray of Lochmaben , also in the Peerage of Scotland .

His son, the 2nd Earl, inherited the titles 3rd Viscount of Stormont and 3rd Lord Scone in 1642 due to a special inheritance regulation . When he died on December 28, 1658, the Earldom Annandale, the Viscountcy Annand and the Lordships Murray of Lochmaben and Murray of Tynningham went out. The other titles fell due to special inheritance to his relative David Murray, 2nd Lord Balvaird , who eight months later also married his widow.
