Niddry Castle

Niddry Castle is a tower house near the Scottish town of Winchburgh in the Council Area West Lothian . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. A previous classification as a Scheduled Monument was revoked in 1996.

history

Niddry Castle was built in the 15th century for Lord Seton , probably John Seton, 2nd Lord Seton . At that time, the Tower House was one of the most important fortifications in the region and provided shelter for Queen Mary Queen of Scots after her flight from Loch Leven Castle in 1568. By the early 17th century, Niddry Castle was added two stories and was one of the tallest fortresses in Scotland. At the same time, the side wing was added. It became the property of the Hopes von Hopetoun House family around 1680 and stood empty for a long time. William Cadell then had the added storeys removed to restore the original level and lived in the Tower House. In the late 20th century, Niddry Castle, which had fallen into disrepair, was restored.

description

The structure is a few hundred meters southeast of Winchburgh between the Glasgow – Edinburgh railway line and the M9 . The four-story Niddry Castle has an L-shaped floor plan . Quarry stone roughly cut into blocks was built into layered masonry . It ends with a cantilevered battlement. There is a vault on the ground floor, from which a spiral staircase leads to the upper floors. The hall is set up on the first floor. The large kitchen, which still reflects the dimensions after the expansion, is remarkable.
