Flectobacillus is a genus of bacteria in the family Cytophagaceae . The type species is Flectobacillus major . The generic name is derived from the Latin word "flecto" (to curve) and the Latin word "bacillus" (rod) and refers to the cell shape . The species occur in freshwater lakes and eutrophic ponds.
Appearance
The cells of the species are rod-shaped, curved to various degrees. The cells of Flectobacillus lacus and F. rhizosphaerae are straight rods. In other species, the shape is often like a horseshoe or like the letter C. An apparently ring-shaped cell can appear, with the two ends overlapping. Helical cells can also be seen in young colonies (24-48 hours). When the cultures are a little older, screw-like thread shapes sometimes appear, the length can be a few tens of micrometers. Rings are rarely formed here.
Growth and metabolism
These are chemo-organotrophic bacteria, they are strictly aerobic . A respiratory metabolism, i.e. breathing , takes place. The oxidase test is positive.
Systematics
The genus Flectobacillus belongs to the order Cytophagales . Some species have been converted, for example the species Flectobacillus marinus , which occurs in seawater, is no longer listed; it has been assigned to Cyclobacterium marinum . The genus consists of the following species:
- Flectobacillus lacus Hwang and Cho 2006
- Flectobacillus major (Gromov 1963) Larkin et al. 1977
- Flectobacillus rhizosphaerae Ramaprasad et al. 2015
- Flectobacillus roseus Sheu et al. 2009
