Lord Torphichen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lord Torphichen is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The Lords' family seat has been Calder House , also known as Caldour Castle , in Mid Calder , West Lothian , since 1579 .

Award

The title was bestowed on January 25, 1564 by Queen Mary Queen of Scots on her sixth cousin Sir James Sandilands . He was previously the Preceptor of the eponymous Maltese Coming Torphichen Preceptory . As part of the Reformation , he transferred this and the associated lands to the Scottish Crown and received them back as a fief . Since he had no children himself, the title and fiefdom should be inheritable to any person ("to his heirs and assignees whatsoever"). Accordingly, his great-nephew followed him as 2nd Lord.

Today's title holder is his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson James Sandiland as 15th Lord.
