Lord Forrester

Lord Forrester is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award

The title was created on July 23, 1633 for Sir George Forrester, 1st Baronet . This had already been raised on November 17, 1625 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia to Baronet , of Corstophine in the County of Edinburgh . After his only son died, his award document was retrospectively supplemented in 1651 with the special provision that the title of lord, in the absence of male descendants, could also be inherited to the following people in descending order:

  1. to the husband of his third daughter, James Baillie and his male descendants from this marriage,
  2. to the husband of his third daughter, William Baillie (James' younger brother) and his male descendants from this marriage,
  3. to all descendants from the two marriages, also in the female line, according to the primogeniture,
  4. to other male descendants of James or an heir to be determined by him.

At the death of the 1st Lord in 1654, the title of Lord fell accordingly to his son-in-law James Baillie as 2nd Lord. The Baronetcy, which was not provided with an appropriate inheritance regulation, has been dormant ever since. Since James left no sons, the title fell to his brother William Baillie as 3rd Lord on his death in 1679 according to special inheritance regulations. His son, the 4th Lord, took the surname Forrester . Its male line died out in 1763 with the death of the 7th Lord, whereupon the title fell to the sister of the 6th Lord. She was inherited in 1784 by her only daughter, the 9th Lady, and in 1808 by her second uncle James Grimston, 4th Viscount Grimston , as 10th Lord. In 1815 he was made Earl of Verulam . The lord title has since been a subordinate title of the respective Earl of Verulam. The current title holder is John Grimston, 7th Earl of Verulam , as the 16th Lord.
