Earl of Orkney is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Scotland .

Awards

The title was first awarded to Robert Stewart on October 28, 1581 . He was an illegitimate son of King Jacob V. His son, the 2nd Earl, was stripped of the title in 1614 for treason.

In the second bestowal, the title was bestowed on January 3, 1696, Lord George Hamilton , a younger son of William Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton . Along with the earliest dignity, the subordinate titles Viscount of Kirkwall and Lord Dechmont were created for him . The titles can also be inherited in the feminine line. Today's title holder is his descendant Oliver St. John as 9th Earl.

Title heir ( Heir apparent ) is the son of the current title holder Oliver Robert St. John, Viscount Kirkwall (* 1969).
