William Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton KG (* December 24, 1634 , † April 18, 1694 in Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was known as William Douglas as a son of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas born from his second marriage with Mary Gordon.

On August 4, 1646 he was raised to 1st Earl of Selkirk .

In 1656 he married Anne Hamilton, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton . Through his marriage he became the Duke of Hamilton out of the law of his wife ( iure uxoris ) . On September 20, 1660 he took the additional surname Hamilton and was elevated to Duke of Hamilton for life ( Life Peerage ) .

Among other offices, the Duke was High Commissioner and High Admiral of Scotland from 1692 to 1694. On March 14, 1689, he was President of the meeting that declared the Scottish throne vacant.

From his marriage to Anne he had four daughters and seven sons:
