Le Riche (family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Le Riche (or Leriche ) family was closely associated with the powerful organized Parisian river boaters ( marchands d'eau ), the heirs of the Gallo-Roman Nautae Parisiaci , who, among other things, had the right to classify and measure wines and the right to confiscate cargo possessed when there was a violation of applicable law.

At the time of the first Capetian kings , the Le Riche owned numerous previously monastic estates after having enriched themselves in the possession of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the previous decades, i.e. in the times of the weak Carolingian kingship in the 10th century . As confidants and allies of the Capetians, they acquired the office of royal Prévôt de Paris in a quasi-hereditary form, which they held until the beginning of the 12th century, and were often referred to as the Counts or Vice Counts of Paris during this period , although the county of Paris 1016 had been canceled. Several members rose to the highest official ranks of the kingdom ( Grand Chamberlain , Grand Chamberlain ) under several kings, or officiated as bishops (including as Bishop of Paris ) and archbishops.

The family only used the name "Le Riche" in the first generations, later the individual branches of the family named themselves after their most important seigneurie (e.g. La Chapelle , Maule and Villebéon ), which makes it difficult to clarify the family connections. The Le Riche are at the beginning of (or in close connection with) the following families:

origin

The names Thion and Guarin, which occur frequently in the Le Riche family, point to a relationship or descent from Warin von Poitou (Gerwin, Guérin, † 679), Count of Paris and ancestor of the Guidonen , and Teudon (Thion, † around 945) , Vice Count and Count of Paris. The name Lisiard in turn points to Bishop Leodegar von Autun (Saint Léger, † 678), Warin's brother.
