Aldbar Castle, or Auldbar Castle , is the ruin of a residential tower about 3.2 km southwest of Brechin in the Scottish county of Angus . The building dates from the 16th century.

history

The Crammond family had owned the property since the 13th century. In 1575 it was sold to John Lyon, 8th Lord Glamis , (1544-1575). His son, Sir Thomas Lyon († 1608) served as treasurer of Scotland from 1585–1595 and had the residential tower built at the end of the 16th century. The property was later owned by the Sinclair family , then the Young family .

The Chalmers family owned the property in the 18th century. The painter Clarkson Stanfield painted the castle in 1801. Patrick Chalmers (1777–1826) had it enlarged in 1810 and his son, Member of Parliament Patrick Chalmers (1802–1854), had extensions added in the Scottish Baronial style in 1844–1854 .

The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh has a 13th-century tombstone from the castle chapel .
