from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pierre II. De la Chapelle , also called Pierre de Nemours († September 13, 1220 in Damiette ) was Bishop of Paris from 1208 to 1219.

origin

Philippe de la Chapelle was a son of Gauthier I. de Villebéon , Grand Chamberlain of France , and Aveline de Nemours, and thus belongs to the Le Riche family . Of his brothers, Gauthier II. De Nemours was also Grand Chamberlain, Étienne was Bishop of Noyon , Guillaume was Bishop of Meaux , Urson de Nemours was Chamberlain to the King, and Jean was Prévôt de Paris .

Life

Pierre was first treasurer (Thesaurarius) of Saint-Martin de Tours . In 1208 he was appointed Bishop of Paris. In 1209 he held a council against the Amalricans , whom he burned. He also fought in the Albigensian Crusade . On his return to Paris, he contributed to the council of the cardinal legate Robert von Courson in 1212 , adding provisions for the office of chancellor.

In 1215 he gave Port-Royal des Champs parish rights by making it an abbey, affiliated to the Cistercian order and subordinate to the Abbey of Les Vaux-de-Cernay . In December 1214 he had already assigned income to the monastery. In 1216 he allowed the election of a first abbess. In 1217 he allowed the Order of Preachers (the later Dominicans) to settle in Paris.

In 1218 he took part in the Damiette crusade and may have died on the way, but more likely later during the siege of Damiette.

His will, which he wrote in June 1218 before his departure for the crusade, is in the Cartulaire de l'abbaye de Porrois au diocèse de Paris .
