Brechin Castle

Brechin Castle is a castle in Angus , Scotland . It is near the town of Brechin and has served as the ancestral home of the Earl of Dalhousie's family since the early 20th century .

history

The castle was built in the 13th century. The land on which the castle was built has been owned by the family of the Earl of Dalhousie since the 12th century and originally covered 607 km². Today around 223 km² of land still belong to the castle. Most of its buildings date from the early 18th century.

In 1696, James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure commissioned the Scottish architect Alexander Edward with extensive renovations. The works in the style of William Bruce lasted until 1709. In addition to the conversion of the buildings designed Edwards from 1701 to 1708 and the associated, about ten hectares large castle park . In the 1990s, the Brechin Castle Center was built on the site . Plants are sold there and a museum on the history of the Picts is maintained.
