Nautae

The nautae ( plural of Latin nauta , m. , Derived from this in technical French nautes ) were the river boatmen in the Roman Empire . The word nauta corresponds to the Greek Ναύτης ("seaman", "sailor"). The Nautae belonged to the Navicularii and were organized in collegia (professional associations).

The Nautae in Lutetia ( Nautae Parisiaci )

An elaborate consecration monument in honor of Jupiter , the pillar of the Nautae Parisiaci , also known as the Pilier des nautes , has been preserved by the boatmen of Lutetia , which was found under the Notre-Dame Cathedral in 1710 and is now in the Musée national du Moyen Âge .

This monument, erected in the time of Tiberius (14–37 AD), shows the images of numerous Roman and Celtic deities.
