Wilhelm Liebenam

Wilhelm Liebenam (also Willy Liebenam , born July 15, 1859 in Eisleben , † September 9, 1918 in Gotha ) was a German ancient historian and high school teacher.

Life

Liebenam studied classical philology and history at the universities of Jena , Tübingen , Berlin and Bonn . He was most influenced by the ancient historians Heinrich Gelzer (Jena) and Arnold Dietrich Schaefer (Bonn), from whom he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . During his studies he became a member of the Teutonia Jena fraternity in 1879 and of the Germania Tübingen fraternity in 1880 .

After graduating, Liebenam worked as a high school teacher. He carried out his scientific work on the side. On May 7, 1886 , he qualified as a professor for ancient history at the University of Jena and has since held lectures on a part-time basis. On July 7, 1890 he was appointed associate professor (without salary). He continued to work at the University of Jena, even after he went to Gotha as a senior teacher (later high school professor) in 1899 . During the First World War he was the only representative of ancient history at the University of Jena, as the professor Walther Judeich served at the front.

Liebenam's research was devoted to Roman history from the Republic to the Imperial Era. He presented numerous studies on military, club and administrative history and wrote review articles for the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity . His work was fundamental to research into ancient history in the 20th century.
