description

Gleneagles Castle is a rectangular residential tower on a small hill with the dimensions 13.50 meters by 7.50 meters with a wall thickness of 2.30 meters. The entrance was in the southwest corner, the upper floors could be reached via two round staircases in opposite corners. There was an open stove on the ground floor, and the foundation walls of some other separate rooms can also be seen. In three of the windows on this level, key notches can be identified as they were common at the end of the 15th century. There is evidence of a vaulted ceiling over a large room on the first floor; the building probably had two more floors. The remains of the outer walls sometimes reach a height of six meters.

The ruin is surrounded by a protective wall, the course of which follows the summit line of the hill and which consists of both stones and soil. It has a width of six meters, the height is 1.30 meters on the inside and 2.70 meters on the outside. Possibly it goes back to an older earthwork from the Iron Age .

At the end of the 1920s, security work was carried out under the direction of General Aylmer Haldane as part of job creation measures, a memorial plaque commemorates this.
