The Battle of Sheriffmuir took place on November 13, 1715 during the first Jacobite Rising northeast of Dunblane near the Ochil Hills . The Jacobite units under John Erskine, 23rd Earl of Mar met British government forces under John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll . Although the outcome of the battle was actually a draw, Argyll withdrew and made no further attempt to continue its advance in the period that followed. Ultimately, the battle contributed significantly to a demoralization of the Jacobite army and thus to the failure of their uprising.
