from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Ramsay, 6th Earl of Dalhousie (* around December 2, 1660 , † December 8, 1739 in Dalkeith ) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier.

Life

Ramsay was born the son of John Ramsay and was baptized on December 2, 1660 in Dundee . The maternal family was from Whitekirk , East Lothian . Around 1700 he married his cousin Jean Ross, daughter of William Ross, 10th Lord Ross and his wife Margaret Forrester. From this marriage there was a son, who died before his father. His second marriage was to Janet Martin. Since Ramsay's second nephew, William, died unmarried and childless, Ramsay took over the hereditary titles of the family with his death in October 1710. He belonged to the army and reached the rank of captain there . When Ramsay himself died in 1739, these passed on to his grandson Charles .
