William Ramsay, 5th Earl of Dalhousie (* around 1679 - † October 1710 in Spain ) was a Scottish - British nobleman , officer and politician.

Family and title

Ramsay was born the second son of William Ramsay, 3rd Earl of Dalhousie and his wife Lady Mary Moore. He had two brothers and a sister. With the death of the father in November 1682, the hereditary titles of the family passed to his older brother George Ramsay, 4th Earl of Dalhousie . With his death in 1696, Ramsay took over both the position of head of the family and the titles.

Since he died unmarried and childless in October 1710, his second uncle , William Ramsay , inherited his title of nobility. His fortune, however, received his sister Lady Elizabeth Ramsay († 1712), wife of Francis Hawley, 2nd Baron Hawley .

Professional background

After he came of age, he first took the seat in the Scottish Parliament on October 24, 1700, associated with his title of nobility . He was a supporter of the Act of Union 1707 . In 1703 Ramsay held the office of sheriff of Edinburgh . In the Scottish military he was Colonel of the Scottish Regiment of Footguards when he was sent with his unit to the Iberian Peninsula in 1704 to meet Charles VI. in his struggle in the War of the Spanish Succession . Ramsay was promoted to brigadier general in January 1710 and died in October of the same year.
