William Ramsay, 3rd Earl of Dalhousie , PC , († November 1682 ) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier.

Family and title

Ramsay was the eldest son of George Ramsay, 2nd Earl of Dalhousie , and his wife Lady Anne Flemming. He had three brothers and four sisters. Before 1682 he married Mary Moore, daughter of Henry Moore, 1st Earl of Drogheda , and his wife Alice Spencer. With her he had a daughter and three sons. With the death of his father in 1673 or 1674 he took over the hereditary titles of the family. With his death in November 1682, these were initially passed on to his eldest son George , who was still a minor at the time. After his early death, his younger brother William inherited the title.

Professional background

In 1672 Ramsay was made a member of the Privy Council by Charles II and also took over the office of sheriff of Edinburgh . In 1678 he entered the Edinburgh militia as captain and took part in the battle of Bothwell Bridge on December 23, 1679 as deputy in command of the Earl of Mar's Regiment .
