Mary O'Brien, 3rd Countess of Orkney

Mary O'Brien, 3rd Countess of Orkney (* around 1721, † May 10, 1791 at Rostellan Castle near Cork in County Cork ), was a British noblewoman .

Life

She was the daughter and only child of William O'Brien, 4th Earl of Inchiquin , and Anne Hamilton, 2nd Countess of Orkney . She was deaf from birth .

On March 5, 1753, she married her paternal cousin Murrough O'Brien (1726-1808).

When her mother died in 1756, she inherited her Scottish nobility titles as 3rd Countess of Orkney , 3rd Viscountess of Kirkwall and 3rd Lady Dechmont . The Irish peerage her father had inherited only in the male line and fell on his death in 1777 his nephew, Mary's husband Murrough as fifth Earl of Inchiquin , 9th Baron Inchiquin and 4th Baron O'Brien .

She died on May 10, 1791 at Rostellan Castle near Cork in County Cork, Ireland and was buried in Taplow in Buckinghamshire, England . From her marriage to Murrough O'Brien she had a daughter, Mary O'Brien , who married Hon. Thomas FitzMaurice, son of John Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne , in 1777 and whom she inherited as 4th Countess of Orkney on her death. Her widower married Mary Palmer for the second time in 1792 and was also promoted to Marquess of Thomond in 1800 .
