Earl Cathcart
Earl Cathcart is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The earl is hereditary chief of Clan Cathcart .
The Earls' family seat is Gateley Hall near Dereham in Norfolk . The family's former ancestral home, Cathcart Castle in Glasgow , has not been inhabited for several centuries, the remains had to be demolished in 1980 due to disrepair.
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on July 16, 1814 for William Cathcart, 1st Viscount Cathcart . He was an important soldier and diplomat during the coalition wars .
As early as November 9, 1807, he had also been raised to Viscount Cathcart , of Cathcart in the County of Renfrew , and Baron Greenock , of Greenock in the County of Renfrew, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . In 1776 he had inherited the title 10th Lord Cathcart from his father , which was given to his ancestor Sir Alan Cathcart in the Peerage of Scotland between 1447 and 1460 .
The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title of Lord Greenock as a probable heir apparent .
